About me

Kent Commercial Photographers

It could have very different if that screen test in 1977 for a Heinz Beanz advert had gone ahead. But that's another story.

An interest in cameras, not really. A passion for photography, yes. Except that apparently I always spot which lenses they're using in TV crime dramas. I like photographing people so I'm not a landscape photographer, even though I like the outdoors. Mainly commercial work (location, studio, editorial, publications) but shoot portraits (I'm a fan of giving people access to magazine-quality pictures) plus about 20 weddings a year. Canon equipment and I'm fortunate to count them as a client (in the UK). Pls see Commercial section for more.

years shooting: 20+;

HEROES: Bailey, Lichfield, Donovan, Sam Jones, Capa, McCullin, Time Magazine, Likes/dislikes: flying in classic aircraft(Y);camping for more than a week (N); tortoises(Y).

Training Tips

The blog is the place to find posts of recent photoshoots together with some information about how the pictures were taken - from commercial shoots to family studio sessions, weddings, portraits and more. Do follow us on Facebook at the Camera Cafe as we will post details of gift vouchers, training courses and other promotions.

Galleries

You can also view galleries of pictures on the blog by category of photography - from portraits on the beach to studio photography. Most of Tim's portrait studio customers are based around Kent - Canterbury, Faversham, Whitstable and Herne Bay - but the location commissions come from London, the south east of England and all over the UK.

So you want to be a model

Q: What modelling scams should I avoid?

A: The reality is that the path to becoming a model is not always paved with gold. To help you a little along the way I've written a free guide that points out some of the common mistakes including parting with lots of cash for a portfolio you might not need.

I love shooting fashion and portfolio images for independent models that ask for them - but when approaching an established agency you don't need to go armed with a stack of glossy pictures under your arm. More >

Choosing a wedding photographer?

So you're tempted to phone a friend? I'm regularly on the panel of experts of wedding magazines and the question about how to choose your wedding photographer comes up a lot. Some people will use a friend or family member with a digital SLR, but just a few crucial questions to consider include:

  1. can they cope with a variety of shooting conditions
  2. do they own backup equipment - are they FULLY insured
  3. have they done it before (and have you seen the results)
